Is Tap Water Upsetting Your Gut Health?

Chlorine, along with 33 other treatment chemicals permitted under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, is introduced into our tap water to kill pathogenic bacteria. Chlorine often has an unpleasant taste and odour, but a question we never fully entertained is: If chlorine kills bacteria, is our tap water upsetting your gut health too?

Is it necessary to have chlorine in our tap water?

Chlorine was first added to our drinking water supplies at the end of the 19th century to prevent waterborne diseases such as Cholera, Dysentery and Typhoid.  Today, chlorination is the most common water treatment method worldwide and is well known for its ability to attack and kill bacteria.  But what about the healthy bacteria in our gut flora?

Poor gut health can also lead to conditions such as bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.

What is the difference between tap water and filtered water?

The difference between tap water and filtered water is the presence of unwanted, potentially harmful contaminants in your drinking water. Our town water is treated to ensure it is safe to drink.  The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines allow up to 33 different chemicals for treatment, including chlorine, ammonia, copper sulphate, fluoride and much more.

If you use town water, the chances are you can smell chlorine in the water you use to bathe in, cook with, drink, and wash your clothes in.

How can we remove these unwanted contaminants from our tap water?
