How To Choose The Correct Water Filter Cartridge

There are so many aspects to consider when purchasing a water filter or water purifier for any system that it can become quite confusing for many people. There is a whole range of water filter cartridges or water purifiers cartridges on the market today at varying prices. When purchasing a water filter there are 4 main considerations before making your decision.
Where does your water supply come from?
Each form of water supply can be completely different from the other, with different contaminants, heavy metals, chemicals, minerals bacteria etc.

What are your main concerns with the water supply you have?
-
Chlorine?
- Heavy metals (such as copper, mercury, lead and alluminium)?
- Bacteria (such as ecoli, cryptosporidium and ghiardia)
- Herbicides?
- Pesticides?
- Dirt, rust and algae?

Microns Explained
Now that you know what sort of water supply you are using, and what you would like reduced/removed from that water supply, you now need to choose the correct water filter cartridge or water purifier cartridge to do the job.
This is where microns come into the equation. On any one water filter cartridge / purifier cartridge you will notice that it will have a micron rating (usually written on the label).
This rating determines what the cartridge will and will not reduce/remove from your water. A micron is 1 millionth of a metre or approximately, 0.00003937 inches (1 strand of hair = apprx. 30 microns), therefore the smaller the micron size of the cartridge, the finer the cartridge will be and the more it will remove/reduce.
The micron size is very important as most contaminants in your water have a size and if it is smaller than the micron size of your cartridge then it will go straight through your cartridge and into your drinking water. It is not in the water filter system itself that does the work it is the filter cartridge or purifying cartridge inside, so if you have a fantastic water system and a low quality water filter cartridge inside, you will not get the results you desire.
However, a great quality water filter system + sub micron filter cartridge / purifier cartridge (.4 microns or less) = Great tasting purified water for your whole family. Peace of Mind and assurance against a wide range of contaminants (see Replacement Cartridges/ CC1E- HT)
Certification
If the filter that you purchase is not a certified product, then you cannot be sure of exactly what you are getting for your hard earned money. Always look and ask for product certification to be sure that you are purchasing a quality product.
Certifications should have test results of what %'s of contaminants are removed or reduced not just a statement that it will do as the label / retailer advises. Even most Australian Standards testing do not test for cartridge performance, only materials used in manufacturing the product.
Do you have a high level of dirt, rust or sediment in your water supply?
If you have found that your water has a high level of dirt, rust or sediment, you may want to consider pre-filtration (sediment removal) to protect the carbon filter / purifier cartridge. If you use an extra fine cartridge on a tank that is full of dirt then you may find that it will block up quite quickly. For this reason there is also a ceramic water filter or Doulton Ultracarb available that has been specifically designed for these conditions. (see ceramic cartridge in replacement cartridges).
